Faith in God Today, Trust in Him Tomorrow

“Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11)
I love it when different parts of my world come together in such a way I know it can only be a God-thing! For example, I read something in my daily devotional recently that I was able to share later on to encourage a friend.  The devotional contained the following:
“Jesus often reminded His followers not to worry. He told them not to be anxious about tomorrow’s needs or potential problems (Matt 6:25).  Rather, Jesus  stressed a daily reliance on the Father, who provides for His children day by day…
God wants us to trust Him daily with our needs.  This trust does not make us poor planners or careless with our futures, unprepared for what may come.  Rather, it keeps our relationship with the Lord in proper perspective as He reminds us daily of our dependence upon Him.  God is aware of what tomorrow will bring and how we should prepare for it.  He knows the problems we will face, and He has already made provision for us to overcome them.  He asks us to trust in Him daily.  Our faith in Him today cannot substitute for our trust in Him tomorrow.  If we walk with Him closely today, we will be in the center of His will tomorrow.” (Experiencing God Day by Day)

Why was this passage so powerful to both me and my friend?  I think because we had just been acknowledging we are “planners.”  Which makes it hard for us to live in the present without always looking anxiously toward the future.  So the part about trusting God daily and keeping a daily reliance on Him – not always the easiest thing for us to do!

I think this is why is was such a good reminder to hear the following, “God wants us to trust Him daily with our needs.  This trust does not make us poor planners or careless with our futures, unprepared for what may come.  Rather, it keeps our relationship with the Lord in proper perspective as He reminds us daily of our dependence upon Him.”  I want to be a good steward of my time, of my plans and of my life.  Yet this is reminding me there is another side of that coin and it is called “Trust.”

This brings me to the other part of this passage which I have been mulling over: “Our faith in Him today cannot substitute for our trust in Him tomorrow.”  What does this quote even mean?  At times I get it and then, like running water through my fingers, its meaning slips away from me again.  So how can I even begin to unpack it? I feel there are multiple takes I could have on this quote.  And I’m not sure that any of them would be the “wrong take” either.  Such a simple sentence with such deep meaning!

At any rate, like a poster on the wall of my bedroom says, “Worry won’t empty tomorrow of its troubles, but it empties today of its strength.”  Worry, Anxiety, Faith and Trust.  All words that we can allow to mold our life today and also shape our tomorrows.  The question is which one will we choose?

Gosh I can’t tell you how much God has been working with me in this area of trust… Your post is yet another reminder of how much I need faith to trust in HIM and not my planning abilities! Good stuff! Going to think on that quote a while too… God always reveals hidden truths at just the right time ♥

Funny how things God is teaching you can begin to pop up all around you sometimes! Glad I could be a part of that in your life with this post. Thanks, Bethany
