The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “agree.” (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:
My senior pastor’s recent sermon called, One Mind To Rule Them All and In The Light Unite Them comes to mind. It was based on Philippians 2 and I especially remember the part from Phil 2:1-4 (NASB),
“Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
The premise of his sermon was that if all those things were happening then Paul wouldn’t have to remind them. So basically, they weren’t encouraging each other, loving each other, having good fellowship together, treating each other with love and compassion or being unified. Instead they were being selfish and conceited, thinking of themselves as above those around them and simply looking out for their own interests.
This shouldn’t be! And yet is very convicting and telling of our churches, our country and the world today. But Paul also gives them the solution in the following verses – find unity in Jesus which is something we can all take to heart:
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross! (Phil 2:5-8 NIV)
