Five Minute Friday: Comfort

The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “comfort.”  (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:

I love the verse about God comforting us so that we can comfort others.  I remember first reading it back in my late teens when I was going through some hard times and then, even in the midst of it all, being able to offer help to someone else I know dealing with the same thing.

It was eye-opening to me.  To realize that God wastes nothing in our life — even those times we would rather not ever go through again?!  And that He is able to use those times to shape our own lives but also to impact the lives of those around us as well.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God(2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV).

I love how The Message puts it too, calling this section of Scripture “The Rescue.”

3-5 All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us. We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5 MSG)

So may you have an extra measure of God’s comfort today in whatever you are dealing with right now in your life.  Yet also know that this comfort, just like God’s unfathomable love for you, is meant to be shared with the hurting world around you.

  1. 2 Corinthians has been one of my favorite verses for years. Love how God has given us what we need to reach out to comfort others with, we don’t have to depend on our own means. FMF-42

  2. Certainly God wastes nothing….even our sorrows and all the pain. If I have gone through it, my prayer can only be that what He has taught me along the way will not only bring Him glory but as well can be used to help someone along the way. Great thoughts this afternoon.

Have a wonderful weekend!! (visiting from FMF!)

  3. “God wastes nothing in our lives.” Yes and Amen, sister! And I love the way The Message translates those verses in 2Corinth! Visiting you from FMF #78
