Five Minute Friday: Define

The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “define.”  (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:

What is truth? Can you define truth for me? Is there an absolute definition of truth or is it all relative?

I discussed all these questions and more with my employer yesterday morning.  I know, pretty heavy stuff for an early Thursday morning.  But the impetus for this conversation was a Seattle Times article we had both read, “UW professor: The information war is real, and we’re losing it.”

The tagline of the article says this: “A University of Washington professor started studying social networks to help people respond to disasters. But she got dragged down a rabbit hole of twitter-boosted conspiracy theories, and ended up mapping our political moment.”  The professor had some interesting points in the article but this wasn’t what bothered me afterward.

What really got me was how much I wish I had shared with my employer how my Christian faith helps me navigate through this “rabbit hole” of facts we are bombarded with on social media every day.  That I do believe we can define some truth, especially when it lines up with the absolute truth presented to us by God in the Bible.

I am reminded of this verse from Isaiah 40:6-8:

“All people are like grass,
and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
    Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.”

So…can we define truth?  While that is a deceptively simple question with no easy answer, in light of God’s Word I believe we can.  And that truth came down to us in the person of Jesus Christ!

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)

In a world that claims truth is relative, it is encouraging to hold fast what we know to be certain, that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Thank you for the reminder.
