The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “guide.” (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:
The first thing that popped into my head when seeing this week’s prompt was the song, “Always let your conscience be your guide,” from the classic Disney movie, Pinocchio. Here it is for your enjoyment!
However, while that is a fun little aside, I think it stands to reason that sometimes we shouldn’t let our own conscience be our guide. This is because I know that often I don’t feel like I can trust myself to guide me in the right direction. My heart, my mind, my emotions are so fickle! “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
So then, what do we let guide us? Jesus gives us the answer to this in John 16:12-14:
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”
I like this idea of letting the Holy Spirit be my guide (as opposed to a little cricket!) but I know I don’t do it enough. It feels a little too touchy-feely to me sometimes I guess? And yet when I do allow the Holy Spirit to guide my actions, as I was just reminded of by some friends last night, good things happen that can change both myself and others around me! Shouldn’t that be enough of a reason for us to “let go and let God” guide us?
