The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “middle.” (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:
I guess I could talk about being a middle child or something like that. But what first comes to mind when I see this prompt is Patricia Heaton, an actor in the TV series The Middle. (Disclaimer: I haven’t actually ever watched the series but I’ve heard good things about it from people who have). So I know, I know it is a bit of a stretch here but bear with me.
You see, yesterday I read this article from Christianity Today called “Patricia Heaton: My career floundered, then flourished because of faith.” In it she discussed how a mission trip to Mexico in her early acting days helped her put things in perspective and realize where her true identity was; not in her acting career but in Christ.
This trip also inspired her current work with World Vision and her work with them inspired this quote from the article:
“As Americans, we tend to do a lot of navel gazing, in terms of what’s going on with us and how we feel about things. The best way to feel better about yourself is to think about somebody else, and the thing that can really give your spirit a lift is when you impact somebody else’s life in a meaningful and tangible way.
There’s a lot of need in this world. There’s always something you can do to help someone else. You’ll find the Holy Spirit; you’ll find Christ; you’ll find God. You’ll find love and mercy and forgiveness when you’re helping the poor. That’s really what we’re called to do here. Once you know Christ, once you know what he did for you in your [spiritual] poverty, then it’s time to reach out to others in physical poverty and bring Christ to them.”
So next time you hear the word, “middle,” think of Patricia Heaton and then World Vision and then what your own personal mission field might be at the moment. I promise that, like me, you won’t be disappointed with where this slightly convoluted train of thought will go!
