Five Minute Friday: Overcome

The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “overcome.”  (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:

Many things come to mind with the word prompt for today.  A couple of them are the  speech by Martin Luther King Jr. entitled, “We Shall Overcome” and also the civil rights anthem by the same name.

These are pretty applicable to my life and worldview right now as racial reconciliation has never been quite as close to me (and perhaps our nation) than as in the last few months.  You see, my church is tackling the topic right now and invited a speaker, Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil, to share with us last month.  I was intrigued and challenged by what she had to say, especially by the quote with which she ended her talk:

Therefore, I’d like to share what I believe about God that is informing the way I view people and the kinds of communities and societies I believe we should live in.  As stated in this Jeremy Camp song, I believe we will ultimately overcome because Jesus first overcame!  That transformation will happen when we first find a relationship with Christ (not in man-made religious structures) and that this relationship should then change how we view and interact with those around us.

May you leave with that hope in your heart today — for yourself, for your neighbors and for your society.
