The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “place.” (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:
I first thought of the Bible verse where Jesus talks about “preparing a place” for His disciples. I found it in John 14:1-3:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
And I have a little trouble with these verses because I think they are sometimes taught within the church in the context that all we have to look forward to as Christians is our “ticket to heaven.” This couldn’t be farther from the truth in my opinion!
It was in Bible School at Capernwray Harbour, that I first feel like I really grasped the whole idea of having abundant life as a Christian here on earth as well as in heaven someday. One of the required reading books was The Saving Life of Christ by Major Ian Thomas and this really helped drive the point home for me.
You see, one of my favorite verses now is John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” To me, this refutes the whole idea that God’s kingdom is simply the “heaven” where believers go when they die.
Abundant Life. Life to the Full. This is the place where I want to be in the here and now!
