The word for this week’s Five Minute Friday free-write is “worth.” (Click on the image above to find some other great posts in the linkup too.) Here goes:
I was talking with a friend recently about the subject of dating and I shared with her a revelation about myself I’ve only in the last few years. You see, in the past I had gone into the dating world with the philosophy of “I’m not worthy.” Not worthy of someone else’s love, not worthy of someone else’s time and energy, not worthy of finding someone to share my life with forever.
It pains me to say this and I know I didn’t recognize this was my thought pattern at the time. So what caused this revelation, you might ask? Well, it was when I finally got out of this destructive thought pattern of feeling unworthy and could look back at it from the other side.
I suddenly came to the realization that this was not how I see myself anymore in regards to my dating life. Instead I have the philosophy that “I am worth pursuing and worth waiting for!” I didn’t know exactly how or what or when things changed but did recognize I look at things differently now.
This change in my thinking has made a huge difference in how I view myself and also how I approach my dating life. I am not looking for someone else to complete me but instead I have a new confidence in myself as I realize my true worth and identity in Christ.
Some of this confidence comes from taking verses to heart such as Daniel 10:19, “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” and also Isaiah 43:1, “But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.“
While I’ve used these verses in regards to my dating life, they could be helpful in other contexts too. So if you have something in your life that you are struggling with right now, ask how you view yourself in that area–worthy or unworthy–and why. And then ask God to show you His truth in it all. Believe me when I say this is worth doing!
