My Life Verses: Daniel 10:19

Day 27: “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” (Dan 10:19)

This verse was again one that I came across during my One Year Bible reading.  The section that really stood out to me was this: “…for you are very precious to God.”  I loved that sentiment and really needed to hear that in my life right then.  That I am God’s beloved and very precious to Him.  That He delights in me and desires to be with me.  That He wants the best for me because I am so special to Him.

This reminds me of an old song I would sing as a kid growing up called His Banner over Me Is Love.  It was taken from Song of Songs 2 :4 “Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love.”   The song lyrics go like this:

The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
The Lord is mine and I am His,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

He brought me to His banqueting table,
His banner over me is love.
He brought me to His banqueting table,
His banner over me is love.
He brought me to His banqueting table,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

He lifted me up into heavenly places,
His banner over me is love.
He lifted me up into heavenly places,
His banner over me is love.
He lifted me up into heavenly places,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

He is the vine and we are the branches,
His banner over me is love.
He is the vine and we are the branches,
His banner over me is love.
He is the vine and we are the branches,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

Jesus is the rock of my salvation,
His banner over me is love.
Jesus is the rock of my salvation,
His banner over me is love.
Jesus is the rock of my salvation,
His banner over me is love.
His banner over me is love!

However, while this song was one I sang as a kid, the actual verses from Song of Songs were certainly never taught to me back then!  I know that this is considered a “racier” book of the Bible but one that is still important to understand now as an adult.  The church is often called the bride of Christ and Jesus our bridegroom.  So the idea that God loves and desires me is not an unbiblical one.

Ann Voskamp wrote this in her book, One Thousand Gifts: Daring to Live Fully Right Where You Are: “Fullness of joy is discovered only in the emptying of will. And I can empty. I can empty because counting His graces has awakened me to how He cherishes me, holds me, passionately values me. I can empty because I am full of His love. I can trust.”

I feel this quote goes well with how I view this verse from  Daniel 10:19.  It may be a little different from the context this verse was written in but no less valid to me.  Because between Daniel 9 and Daniel 10 the phrase, “you are very precious to God” was given to Daniel three times.  (Dan 9:23, 10:11, 10:19)  Obviously God wanted this to be something that sunk deep into Daniel’s heart and mind.

And so I pray that it has into mine as well.  I also hope that this concept can then allow me to be courageous, peaceful, encouraged and strong in my own life just as Daniel 10:19 commands.  A tall order?  Maybe but one I know that God can fill.  The same God who loves and desires and cherishes me!

Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” (Dan 10:19)
