Step By Step

“You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water…
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
”   (Psalm 63:1, 4)

The song, Step by Step/Forever We Will Sing (inspired by Psalm 63), is often one that pops into my head when I want to sing a worship song.  Not sure exactly why it happens this way but when I spontaneously start to praise God in song, I usually start out with this particular one.  It happened again just recently.  The first part of the song goes like this:

“Oh God, You are my God
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You (2x)

I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days”

It’s interesting that different parts of the lyrics have jumped out at me at certain times in my life.  Sometimes it is the idea that He is MY GOD and He loves me unconditionally (see Jeremiah 31:3).  Sometimes it is my desire to follow God ALL MY DAYS and how He stays with me through thick and thin (see Deuteronomy 31:6).  Other times it is about earnestly SEEKING after Him and that I am drawing near to Him just as He draws near to me (see James 4:8).

Lately though it has been the line, “And STEP BY STEP You’ll lead me,” that stands out to me the most.  A section in Anne Lamott’s book, Bird by Bird, says this: “E.L Doctorow once said that ‘writing a novel is like driving a car at night.  You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.’  You don’t have to see where you’re going, you don’t have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way.  You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you.  This is right up there with the best advice about writing, or life, I have ever heard.”  And I would have to agree!

I agree because most of us don’t go out driving at night and then come all unglued because we can’t see the road ahead of us any further than our headlights show us.  No, we understand that our headlights will illuminate just enough of the road that is needed for us at the moment.  Night driving is such a commonplace occurrence that we don’t usually worry about it at all.  But such is not always the case with our lives.

In our lives (or at least in my life) we often become so paralyzed by the fact we can’t see the entire road ahead of us that we end up simply stopping and not moving anywhere at all.  Sometimes, we’ll try so hard to figure out what might be around the next bend that we miss seeing any of the road that is right in front of us.  Or we become so anxious about not knowing where our road will end up that we merely inch along fearfully.  This is NOT how God calls us to live.

No, one of my favorite verses from the Bible is John 10:10 where Jesus states, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”  Full life, rich life, abundant life – this is the life God calls us to!  So then, how does God’s idea of living our lives simply “step by step” play out?  Proverbs 20:24 tells us, A person’s steps are directed by the Lord.  How then can anyone understand their own way?”  Also, Psalm 37:23-24 says, The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

To me, the verse from Proverbs shows us that it is okay to not understand – God knows we aren’t supposed to be able to figure our entire lives out right now anyway.  And the passage from Psalms invites us to the realization that even if we feel our lives starting to tumble down around us, we can trust in God to get us through without falling.  Therefore, let us be reassured by these truths from Scripture as God leads us along the pathway of our lives – step by step – with his guiding light illuminating merely the next two or three feet ahead of us needed for the moment.

“Oh God, You are my God
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You (2x)

I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days”
